$Id: INSTALL-sys-unix.txt 373 2023-01-21 22:36:22Z karl $ (public domain) The steps below install the Lucida OpenType font distribution from TUG on your system, where they can be used with any application supporting OpenType fonts, as well as the LuaTeX and XeTeX extensions of TeX. This documentation file is for most Unix systems, including GNU/Linux, FreeBSD, Solaris, etc., which all use the fontconfig library (https://fontconfig.org) for system font management. macOS and Windows have their own documentation files. 1) Download the zip file from TUG via the url given to you after ordering. 2) Unzip the archive in a convenient location; any directory will do if you aren't using TeX. (If you are using TeX, the recommended directory is a "local texmf" tree; see INSTALL-TeX.txt for details on that.) 3) Copy our sample file lucidaot-fontconfig.conf (included in the Lucida distribution) to ~/.fonts.conf. If you already have a ~/.fonts.conf file, you'll need to add the Lucida directory to that file by hand. 4) Edit ~/.fonts.conf to specify the subdirectory where the Lucida*.otf files are, or all your locally-installed OpenType fonts, if you have others. 5) Tell fontconfig about the change, by running the command: fc-cache -fv 6) To test: browsers, office applications, etc., should now show the Lucida OT fonts as an option. See INSTALL-TeX.txt for testing with TeX. (See README.txt for additional documentation, contact information, legalities, and more.)
