Central New York tourist activities
- Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute,
located in Troy, is the nation's oldest technical school.
- Downtown Troy is home to historic brownstones, shops and
restaurants. Troy Music
Hall is a renowned concert venue. Most downtown shops are closed
on Mondays.
- Troy is also home to the Curtis R. Priem Experimental Media and
Performance Art Center (EMPAC). We hope to arrange a tour of EMPAC
for conference participants.
- Nearby Albany is the capital of New York state, home to the New York
State Capitol Building, the State Museum, the State Library, Empire
Plaza, and plenty more.
- A short drive north of Troy is Waterford, and Peebles Island State
Park. Waterford was the official beginning of the Erie
Canal, and the park is a good place to explore its history.
- An hour north of Troy is Lake George, a popular summer
destination, and the gateway to the Adirondacks.
- The adventurous can head further north on a day trip to Lake Placid,
NY (about a 2.5 hour drive). Lake Placid was the site of 2 Winter
Olympics. Visitors can take a bob sled ride, view ski jump practice
(yes, both in summer), or visit the John Brown farm.
- South of Troy are the historic towns of Hyde Park, with the FDR and
Vanderbilt estates, and Kingston,
NY (former state capital). Some of the other scenic Hudson Valley sites:
- New York City is approximately three hours south.
