[XeTeX] Odd xelatex / pdflatex behaviour on 64 bit systems

This may have something to do with a "bug" in graphicx which was discussed some weeks ago. Then also there was an issue with a figure not showing up where it was supposed to. Let's hear what the gurus have to say.
