You are quite right, I haven't yet become familiar with xelatex yet
nearly well

It certainly helped. In the end, I also needed to remove this line:
\setmainfont[Mapping=tex-text]{SeriaPro-Regular}
Although with Gentium or other fonts it worked even with this line, with
SeriaPro it does not. Only this line remains:
\setromanfont[ItalicFont={SeriaPro-Italic}]{SeriaPro}
Well, that, on the face of it, seems so straightforward that I should 've
thought of it before. Many thanks Jonathan, this really is a great help
for me.
