Dear Dr Telang,
To my knowledge xfig may not work in windows (may be you can try installing
Cygwin and run it in windows platform).
xfig is definitely a wonderful tool for making pictures. However, in windows
platform you can use the following which generate LaTeX / TeX / eps / png /
pdf / ... as output formats

(i) Inkspace (http://www.inkscape.org/)
(ii) jpgfdraw (http://theoval.cmp.uea.ac.uk/~nlct/jpgfdraw/index-frame.html)
(iii) LaTeXDraw (http://latexdraw.sourceforge.net/index.html)
(iv) Tikz (http://www.texample.net/tikz/resources/) . Here you can find lots
of lots of tools for use in Linux / mac / Windows platforms.

I hope, your students will get in love with LaTeX.

Wishes
Thomas
