I was also trying this out. I think ttf is reqd. BTW, devnag has all the 
type-1 fonts (in fact, a large number of them with the latest version). 
There is a document on the net giving a fairly straightforward procedure 
to convert ttf to type-1 (on dante-> tex-archive/info/TrueType ), maybe 
there are documents on the reverse also there.
