Hi,
You have probably set \parindent to 0 somewhere. Perhaps
AMS-latex resets it again.  Try putting \setlength{\parindent}{10pt}
immediately before \begin{document}, if
you want to set the first line indent to 10pt.

Dear Friends,
             When I try to indent the first line of a section in a Latex
document by the command \par, it does not work but it works nicely in a
AMS-Latex document. Please help me to start a paragraph in the first
line
of a section in a Latex document. Thanking all
                                                     Yours sincerely
                                                     Indrajit Lahiri
