For me, there should be one definitive "format of record" which captures
the content without reference to output format, typography, etc. In this
way I feel the content is truly futureproof.

XML happens to have full structure and is a kind of de facto standard, and
can easily be transformed to HTML. TeX was designed for beautiful
typography and is unsurpassed for that. Ideally in the format of record we
do not have typographic information, but it is possible to put "hints" for
typography, kerning, etc, e.g. in Processing Instructions that can be used
if it is to be typeset.
