[texhax] shading

Hello,

I am trying to use Salomon's (page 425) or equivalently  TUGboat Volume 13
No 3 pp 327  "shading" routine.   I have attached this below as well.

the TeX program  seems to create a .dvi file but  then dvipdfmx complains
about unparsed postscript.    Do I need a different dvi to pdf program? or
is something at fault?
