[texhax] chapter command

Elaborating on David’s reply, inbetween the end of the last chapter and the beginning of the appendix is the right place to use the \backmatter command:

\chapter{last chap title}
zzzz

\backmatter

\appendix
\chapter{first appendix title}
zzzz
