actually, the recommendation is to use

\begin{theorem}\leavevmode

but i really don't want to have to
explain that.  the use of an unbreakable
space is reasonable too, as it is not
visible in output as long as the header
is the only thing on the line.  however,
if there's an option to the header that
would occupy the rest of the line, i'm
not sure whether this might not leave
a blank line if it's forced to the next
line.  (i'll test it when i get time.)

it still doesn't solve the problem of
a possible page break after the header,
which is the problem at issue here.
