[texhax] why no marker in footnote?

I put your suggested

 \makeatletter
 \renewcommand\@makefntext[1]{%
     \parindent 1em%
     \noindent
     \hb at xt@1.8em{\hss\@makefnmark}#1}
 \makeatother

in after "\maketitle" and everything appears to work great.
(if I put it in before \begin{document}, then the subject
classification footnote also ends up having an "unwanted" footnote
marker).

Thank you very much for your very prompt and very useful answer.
