[texhax] formatting equation numbering

    Is it possible to change the style of equation numbering in the amsbook.cls package?
    Could someone explain it for an outsider how to make it?

what do you want the numbering to look
like?  if you want your equations
numbered by chapter, add this to
the preamble:

  \numberwithin{equation}{chapter}

then the second equation in chapter 3
(for example) will be numbered (3.2).

if you want the numbering to restart
with every section,

  \numberwithin{equation}{section}

then the numbering will have the
section number included at the
beginning; if the section numbers
include the chapter number, then the
equation numbers will have three parts.
this would be the result of

  \numberwithin{section}{chapter}
