Thank you.  It was worth looking into it, but — alas — it is even worse.  Eg, the string ``x'' is about 2.5pt wider in CM than in CM-super.  Indeed, for the quotation mark ``, I see in cmr10.tfm (in PL translation)

  (CHARACTER O 42
     (CHARWD R 0.500002)

but in ecrm1000.tfm (CM-Super)

  (CHARACTER O 20
     (CHARWD R 0.333252)

LM ec-lmr10.tfm is a bit closer to CM, with 

  (CHARACTER O 20
     (CHARWD R 0.472)
