it should be fleqn there not fleqno, sorry. With flushed left
equations the rationale for /not/ applying short vertical
skips after a text line however short is more convincing; I
was a bit surprised to see that Plain TeX does this whenever
\leqno is in use, but one cannot put completely in parallel
the Plain TeX \leqno and the flush left equations of LaTeX
or amsmath. 

The flushed left equations certainly have more
convincing grounds for being shifted down a bit viz. last
line of text (except in RTL situations, I guess...)
