I think that should be

\renewcommand{\thechapter}{\arabic{chapter}}		% usually unnecessary, should be the default
\renewcommand{\thesection}{\thechapter.\alph{section}}
\renewcommand{\thesubsection}{\thesection.\arabic{subsection}}	% usually unnecessary, should be the default

(untested!)
