Well, I tried it. tlmgr first upgrades itself and exits. When I ran it 
again, it was already called TeX Live Manager 2011, and it upgraded 
around 100 packages. It still uses the 2010 path. So everything seems 
fine, but I still don't know if installing from scratch has any 
advantages.
