Thank you very much for your responses: this worked perfectly. Indeed,
'\begin{multicols}{...}' and '\end{multicols}' must be \protect-ed. I
don't have problem with last column stretching since I have very large
number of sections, but it's got to know for '\vfill\strut', excellent
idea.
