That's bad advice. pdflatex can handle TrueType and there are several
tools for easily installing OpenType fonts for pdflatex (e.g.
otfinst). And of course XeTeX and LuaTeX can handle OpenType natively.

Get OpenType, if you can (unless you have good reason to still use
dvips).
