Obviously, you haven't; it was sort of destined to failure: \left looks for
\right and then tries to work with what's inbetween and that includes
\mathord{ with now a missing right brace.

One could, of course, do something using a macro with arguments to correct
the spacing, but ... \middle is so much easier.
