How about this as a better allegory: Suppose you are driving through 
a foreign country and you've bothered to learn the basics about the 
native language.  You have a map of the country, but you get lost in 
a mid-sized city.  You work up the nerve and politely ask someone 
who probably lives there for directions, and she responds "You fool, 
you should have bought a map of this city!" and turns she her back 
and walks away.
