[texhax] fontinst: .AFM (only .PFB and .PFM at hand)

I did the conversions, put the files into place, made the 'galliard.sty' 
according to  the 'fontinstalationguide' and run 'texhash'.

I call the font:
\usepackage{galliard}

When I run latex, the process 'errors' with following error message:
[LaTeX] finished with exit status 1
./FONT-ITCGalliard.tex:10:Missing = inserted for \ifnum.
./FONT-ITCGalliard.tex:10:Missing number, treated as zero.

I Googled for this error message, but it's not clear what causes it.
When I look at the output (dvi and ps), I cannot find any error.

Any ideas?
