Just signed up for the list and saw Alex Scorpan's example:

\documentclass{amsart}

\begin{document}

\noindent
Blah Blah Blah Blah Blah Blah Blah Blah Blah Blah Blah
\begin{align*}
A=B BBBBBBB BBBBBB&\\
	&A=B BBBBBBB BBBBBB
\end{align*}
Blah Blah Blah Blah Blah Blah Blah Blah Blah Blah Blah
\begin{multline*}
A=B BBBBBBB BBBBBB\\
A=B BBBBBBB BBBBBB
\end{multline*}
Blah Blah Blah Blah Blah Blah Blah Blah Blah Blah Blah

\end{document}

The problem is that multline inserts a \jot before the first line. This is
definitely a bug, and I'll go see if I can find it in the amsmath code.

As a quick workaround you can use the fake multline environment from the
empheq package

\begin{empheq}{multline*}
A=B BBBBBBB BBBBBB\\
A=B BBBBBBB BBBBBB
\end{empheq}

Cheers,
