surely you know very well that it's deprecated?

and why's it not relegated to 2.09? -- precisely because it's
impossible to get rid of.  that it continues to provide us with
streams of questions about how to do bold italic, and the like, is
neither here nor there...

and besides, these old font commands (as they're declared in latex
sources) have their [real] uses, for people who understand what's
going on.  for example, there's karl's method of avoiding warnings by
using \tt in a description list environment.
