This has nothing to do with the New York Journal, but there are times
when it's *useful* not to have font styles combine.  It came up for me
most recently in a description list, where the items were already bold,
the text was in typewriter, and bold tt is just too ugly and too bold.
So I just said \item[{\tt foo}] instead of \item[\texttt{foo}].  No muss
no fuss.
