Hi Joan,

    Is there a way to turn \thebibliography into a literal argument?  We need
    to use "List of Arab Scholars" instead of REFERENCES.  

Does this work:
\renewcommand\refname{your heading for bibliography}

(\bibname instead of \refname for book and report.)
