Just to establish a baseline, I posted the following in response to a
similar personal e-mail last night:

You've two choices:

  - reprogram the relevant commands, e.g.,
\renewcommand{\maketitle}{...} where the ellipsis contains the desired
new commands

or

  - switch to a more flexible documentclass --- I'd suggest Peter
Wilson's Memoir. The documentation for this is extensive, and it was
designed very much with the sort of tweaking you wish to do in mind,
_and_ it has an option to mimic the article class (but if you want a
titlepage, you probably shouldn't use that option).

You can find Memoir on CTAN at:

http://www.ctan.org/tex-archive/macros/latex/contrib/memoir/

and I've a direct link to the manual and some other texts which may
help:

http://members.aol.com/willadams/books-e-tex.html

I believe that if you spend an evening reading the manual and process
the LaTeX source for reference you should be able to work out 95% of
your difficulties. The balance can probably be addressed by the FAQ
available at:

http://www.tex.ac.uk/cgi-bin/texfaq2html?introduction=yes

and judicious searching of the newsgroup comp.text.tex using

http://groups.google.com

http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-
8&safe=off&c2coff=1&q=%22your+query+here%22&btnG=Search&meta=group%3Dcom
p.text.tex

where you replace ``your+query+here'' with a descriptive text of what
you need to learn about.
