This will not give the needed input, since the words "iff" and "and" will 
also be treated as mahematical formulas. The best way seems to be to use 
the "amsmath" package and do

        \begin{equation*}
          a=b\;\text{iff}\;a\geq b\;\text{and}\;a\leq b
        \end{equation*}
