[texhax] Bold symbols

\xi is not present in the t1 encoding (any more than it is in the ot1
encoding).  what you're missing is a bold (adobe) symbol font.
mathptmx uses symbol (indirectly) for greek letters, and afaik adobe
don't make a bold version.

try \pmb{\xi}, or revert to a maths font that _does_ have a bold
version.
