[texhax] Help with math symbols

Dear texusers,

Is there any command to generate the symbol for standardeviation is 
LaTeX. i. e., <>? When i use the keyboard inputs < and >, the spacing 
between symbols  appears to be a  bit larger compared to  aesthetically 
pleasing smaller spacing. This "increased spacing" appears to be 
prominent  when I use  the symbol in  the text
