[texhax] signum(x) function?

Can someone tell me if there is a LaTeX or AMSLaTeX function for
signum(x), the algebraic sign of x? I expected \sgn{x}, but that gives an
error. I've looked in the standard places,
(Lamport, Kopla and Daly, and Gr"{a}tzer)
but to no avail.
I tried \sgn, \signum, and \sign, but all are undefined.

I got by with (using the package amsmath
\newcommand{\sgn}{\text{sgn}}

but would rather follow LaTeX convention if there is one.
Thanks,
