Zdenek,

As far as I know, installing with MacTeX and then changing
permissions on /usr/local/texlive works fine. You can test this
directly by temporarily renaming the texlive folder. Then install
BasicTeX and change permissions on the newly created
texlive directory. Check that standard operations work I
conjecture that they do..

MacTeX installs an auxiliary structure in /Library/TeX/Distributions.
In case of trouble, the permissions on Distributions could, I
suppose, be changed.

I’d like to ask a favor. Users like you who understand Unix
should do whatever they like.. Iff you have colleagues
who know nothing about Unix, and you set up TeX for them,
please don’t make a similar change UNLESS you give them
your card and say “if you have trouble, call me.”

Herb Schulz and others support MacTeX users,
who rarely report permission changes and often aren’t aware
of them. Several times, he has spent days back and forth before
discovering that the user’s computer has been completely
reconfigured by technical support.
