I'm not claiming biber is a bastardization of BibTeX the processor; I mainly object to non-backwards-compatible extensions to BibTeX's .bib database format, whether biblatex or biber is the motivator for such changes.

Sorry for the off-topicness. I was mainly curious about whether LuaTeX was required.
