[tex-live] Using updmap in TL2012

Howdy,

I thought that `updmap' (not `updmap-sys') in TeX Live 2012 would read an updmap.cfg file in $TEXMFHOME/web2c and write system map files to $TEXMFVAR/... .

I just made an empty dummy map file and placed it in $TEXMFHOME/web2c (~/Library/texmf/web2c in a MacTeX install) and then did the following:

$ updmap
updmap is using the following updmap.cfg files (in precedence order):
  /usr/local/texlive/2012/../texmf-local/web2c/updmap.cfg
  /usr/local/texlive/2012/texmf/web2c/updmap.cfg
  /usr/local/texlive/2012/texmf-dist/web2c/updmap.cfg
updmap: Directory "/usr/local/texlive/2012/texmf-var/fonts/map/dvips/updmap" isn't writable:  at /usr/texbin/updmap line 1206.

Note that $TEMFHOME/web2c/updmap.cfg is NOT on the list of cfg files to be read AND it is trying to write to $TEXMFSYSVAR/... (which is owned by root under MacTeX so the write fails).
