Which is almost nothing when measured by today's standards (on the computer I use at work, I could theoretically install the full scheme 800 times on the hard disk, or 20 times in the main memory), but still there are people who complain about this size:

Mostly obsoleted by biblatex/biber.

Only 284K? That is probably only the part that LaTeX has "stolen."

Useful, has to stay. Lots of documentation is good, but I wonder whether in the future we should write HTML manuals instead of PDF, which would be more user-friendly (no fixed layout, better hypertext capabilities, JavaScript) and require less space.

> 4.5M /usr/local/texlive/2010/texmf-dist/dvips

Not required any more

> 863M /usr/local/texlive/2010/texmf-dist/fonts

Only OpenType fonts are required

> 1.4M /usr/local/texlive/2010/texmf-dist/ls-R

Needed for infrastructure (but it is a design flaw, namespaces mapped to directories would have been better)

> 276K /usr/local/texlive/2010/texmf-dist/makeindex

Replaced by Xindy

> 484K /usr/local/texlive/2010/texmf-dist/metafont

Replaced by FontForge

> 2.7M /usr/local/texlive/2010/texmf-dist/metapost

Is in active development, so should stay

> 36K /usr/local/texlive/2010/texmf-dist/mft

See metafont

> 2.1M /usr/local/texlive/2010/texmf-dist/omega

Obsolete, included in LuaTeX

> 256K /usr/local/texlive/2010/texmf-dist/pbibtex

What's this?

> 6.1M /usr/local/texlive/2010/texmf-dist/scripts

Mostly infrastructure

> 183M /usr/local/texlive/2010/texmf-dist/source

Very few people need the sources

> 172M /usr/local/texlive/2010/texmf-dist/tex

Most packages are still useful even in newer engines

> 22M /usr/local/texlive/2010/texmf-dist/tex4ht

Not used by many

> 4.0K /usr/local/texlive/2010/texmf-dist/vtex

What's that?
