[tex-live] Adding fonts [was: TeXlive 2010 on XP]

Hi Tomek and Lars.
I'm afraid that although I've been using LaTeX for a few years to set a
number of articles for internet publication as PDFs, I've never been able to
work out how to change fonts within a document. At one time, I did manage
to change the font for the whole document to Palatino, but that's one of the
fonts which come with the installation.
I'm afraid I use Windows (XP and 7) and I've alsways used the TeXlive
distribution from TUG, which I find to be excellent. Any difficulty is
entirely due to my incompetence! I have the standard books but I've never
understood the way TeX finds its fonts. Thus I've never been able to crack
adding fonts - particularly not TTF fonts.
A friend sent me a document which uses a simulated typewriter font
(typical.ttf) and switches back and forth to it from something else.
Obviously, I can use his source as a template for actually changing the font
but adding it to the system is the problem. He suggested that the TTF font
can be added as described in:
http://www.radamir.com/tex/ttf-tex.htm
It appears that these instructions (which work, as far as generating the
various files is concerned) work on MiKTeX but assume a different structure
and utilities from TeXlive. Or is it that I'm using the 2007 system, and
things have moved on? I have searched the web for similar instructions
which will work but have had no success. If anyone can point me in the
right direction, I'd be grateful.
Having used the system for ages, I really should know more about how it
works!!

It would be pretty bad engineering on our part to interfere with
already installed software. FYI, in case you want to use your
existing perl installation with TL, there was recently a change in
this respect:

WDYM by changing font? Where do you want to change it? This needs
further explanation.
Cheers,
