using distiller 9 (i think it is, on that server[*]),i get:

-rwxr-xr-x 1 rf10 763230 2010-02-13 08:09 languages.pdf
-rw-r--r-- 1 rf10 864713 2010-02-13 08:06 languages.ps
-rwxr-xr-x 1 rf10 129807 2010-02-13 08:10 ucs.pdf
-rw-r--r-- 1 rf10 152497 2010-02-13 08:06 ucs.ps

by contrast, your files are:

--w-r----- 1 ctan 20724260 2010-02-12 21:53 languages.pdf
--w-r----- 1 ctan 3638287 2010-02-12 21:56 ucs.pdf

it occurs to me that someone more expert than i in understanding pdf
files might understand what you've done, better than i.

this is now understood -- manuel has installed my original.

robin

[*] i have access to a "windows terminal server" which talks to the same
file server as the un*x world talks to. very good it is, too, except
where the file protections are something arcane.
