What will the trade-offs be? It doesn't have to be a trade-off. You can install the "native" TL in /usr/local (the default), and it will not interfere with the "system" TeX in /usr/bin etc. You can switch between them as needed by changing your PATH. (FWIW, personally I never run the distro TeX.)
