Are you concerned with the problem of installing getnonfreefonts
or are you thinking of manual installation of the fonts without using
getnonfreefonts?

One approach is to create a local texmf tree devoted to non-free
fonts, say texmf-nffonts, and tell students how to add the tree
to their texlive installation (e.g., symlink to the directory on a
server and update the texmf.cnf).

There have been improvements in the selection of free fonts. Certainly
there are existing documents that use fonts obtainable with
getnonfreefonts, but for new work it may be better to use free
fonts. If there are problems with the free fonts the chances of
getting the fixes made are much better than with the non-free fonts.
