Thanks, I have no changed tlmgr to:
- show the "meaning" of the setting
- only accept values that are supported
- accept "infty" instead of -1
- document the above problem in the man page and suggest either using
    tlmgr -- option autobackup -1
  or 
    tlmgr option autobackup infty

Now it also warns when at setting time the directory does not exist.

But if you want to try it you have to use tlcritical from tomorrow.
Or get the update tlmgr.pl from svn.
