I used /etc/environment, where I have

PATH="/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin:/ 
usr/games:/usr/local/texlive/2008/bin/x86_64-linux"

As a matter of fact, I commented out the path in my ~.bashrc
