from postings it looks like someone installs the whole lot, in which case it makes more sense just to copy the dvd's texmftrees directly, install the binaries in a known path and set the texmfcnf env var to point to the right spot, 

(i must admit that i never install tex on windows/linux using an installer, one you have a tex setup, updating is just copying -)
