Hmm.  How does the HP ld want static linking to be specified?
Apparently -Bstatic is not it.  (If you want to dig down another level,
you could try installing the GNU binutils, but that might just get us in
deeper.)

Urgh, I hope Jonathan has some insight into that.

Do you have the latest
rsync://tug.org/tldevsrc/Build/source/configure?  Jonathan tried to put
in a dependency so that freetype2 would be built for dvipng, even
without xetex.  

Alternatively, try setting
needs_freetype2=yes
in the environment before running configure.

Alternatively, try specifying
--with-freetype2-libdir=/ldir --with-freetype2-include=/idir
but I have to admit I'm not entirely sure what /ldir and /idir should
be.  ../../libs/freetype2, maybe.

    so I really haven't accomplished anything over last week.

Try to keep your hopes up anyway :).
