Does OS X need pdfopen/pdfclose at all?  On Win32 they are important 
because you can't write over an open PDF, so if you start pdftex without
remembering that you have the PDF open, you get an error (asking for a
filename). On unix/linux all they can do is save manually reloading the
document.

What happens if the pdf file is being written to a shared disk exported from a
Win32 OS?
