Yes, I could, but not with kpsewhich

fonttext.cfg in this case. kpsewhich no problem:

hedwig:~ gerben$ kpsewhich --progname=xelatex fonttext.cfg
/usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf.tetex/tex/generic/config/fonttext.cfg
hedwig:~ gerben$ kpsewhich --progname=latex fonttext.cfg
/usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf.tetex/tex/generic/config/fonttext.cfg

xetex, problem:

running `xetex -ini -jobname=xelatex -progname=xelatex *xelatex.ini'
...
This is XeTeX, Version 3.14159-2.1-0.88 (Web2C 7.5.2) (INITEX)
entering extended mode
(/usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf.local/tex/xetex/xelatex.ini
(/usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf.local/tex/xetex/xplain.tex)
(/usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf.tetex/tex/latex/base/latex.ltx
(/usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf.tetex/tex/latex/base/texsys.cfg)
./texsys.aux found

\@currdir set to: ./.

Assuming \openin and \input
have the same search path.

Local config file fonttext.cfg used

(/usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf.tetex/tex/cslatex/fonttext.cfg

I tried using the kpsewhich from TL2003:

hedwig:~ gerben$ sudo cp
/usr/local/Build/TeXLive/bin/powerpc-apple-darwin-current/kpsewhich
/usr/local/teTeX/bin/powerpc-apple-darwin-current/kpsewhich.752
Password:
hedwig:~ gerben$ kpsewhich.752 --progname=xelatex fonttext.cfg
/usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf.tetex/tex/generic/config/fonttext.cfg

again, no problem.

Note, the TEXINPUTS.xetex variable fixes the problem. But it remains
weird.
