[tex-live] texmf.cnf variable setting

I have added a line like

main_memory.jadetex = 2000000

to the end of

/usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf/web2c/texmf.cnf

but when I type

[dumbledore:src/i-Packages/jadetex] gerben% kpsewhich 
-expand-var='$main_memory.jadetex'

I get

1000000 % words of inimemory available: also applies to inimf&mp.jadetex

what do I not understand here?
