I agree with you in general, but TeX is an unfortunate example. People 
with large amounts of legacy data tied up in TeX turn out to have made 
rather a bad choice, since it is now impossible to get much that is
meaningful from these typesetting codes, which are only processed by a
single, weird, processor :-}
