Hi Martin,

are you talking about `official' libraries like zlib, libpng, libfreetype,
t1lib, and libgd?  For all those yes, of course.  That is all more or less
automatic, only specifying the location of libpng (libpng or libpng12)
still needs improvement.  For the others like libxpdf and liblua no, there
you need patched versions.

You can even build all the TeX & Co stuff using an installed (shared or
static) libkpathsea if you want to do so.

Finally, the new build system supports a staged install (make
DESTDIR=some_prefix install) useful for package building.  I hope the debian
crowd (and others) will like that.

You are invited to have a look at the current status (still lacking some
important pieces) at one of these places (essentially the same)
