[pdftex] colors and lines in tables

Hello,
Has anyone been able to solve the problem discussed in this thread?:

In short, we use colortbl to produce alternating colours in tables. The
colours are painted after table lines are drawn, causing lines to
``disappear'' when viewed in PDF.

If not, can anyone provide some pointers as to how I might go about
solving it? I'm experienced with LaTeX macros, but have not delved into
the depths of  pdftex before.
