This is the culprit: your personal MAP file setup! The cure is easy:  
either remove the whole branch (rm -rf ~/.texlive2008 in Terminal) or  
rename it to "~/was .texlive2008" that this file cannot be found. Then  
it will work.


BTW, why are you still using the antique DVI output file format with  
the pdfTeX engine? Direct production of PDF is possible, and when  
using the microtype package you can produce documents with an improved  
"look & feel" ...
